Hi. I've been exploring my maternal line for just about 2 years. I'm a direct descendant of Jarvis Bowen, who died 24 November 1844 in Cincinnatus, Cortland Co., New York and was born on or about (according to gravesite marker) 20 January 1784. Census records of his children indicate that he was born in Rhode Island. Online trees often state that he was the son of Elihu Bowen, Jr. (born 14 October 1758 in Rehoboth, RI; died 7 June 1845 in Scituate, RI) and Martha Ann Potter (born 21 November 1757 in Scituate, RI; died 12 June 1816 in Scituate, RI), but I can find no sources that verify or even suggest that other than these online trees. Furthermore, there are other sources which list children of Elihu and Martha Ann Bowen, including birthdates, and Jarvis is not listed as a child, and his implied birthdate is 9 months from the given birthdate of Elihu and Martha Ann's eldest daughter Lucia. This information makes me skeptical of the claim that he is the son of Elihu and Martha Ann Bowen.

I would greatly appreciate any insight or information regarding Jarvis Bowen. Additionally, there is indication that his wife was Susan Eddy, daughter of Elkanah Eddy, Jr. and his wife Mary Hopkins. I can find no record stating that either, and I would appreciate any confirmation of her identity as well. Thank you!

Y-dna results on FTDNA are I-M170. Prediction is I-L38 and 23 and me is I-S2488. I have not found any one with the surname Bowen besides already known cousins that have the same haplogroup. I really wanted to pinpoint where my Bowen line came from. My true Ancestry matches my line to R1b1 like a very long time ago with many branch offs. I am just wondering if there has ever been anyone that tested through Moses Bowen's line and if so what their haplogroup is? Also, where do I need to go from here to find the oldest Bowen in my line to see if they will do the big Y test? Any info or advice would greatly be appreciated.

Some data indicate Moses John was the son of Evan listed above and that they are haplogroup R-DF27.

What is your FTDNA kit number? I can look into this more for you. Also, Drinkwater-1864 is likely able to offer insight into your Bowen lineage, as well. Take care, -Nathan

Searching for the parents of Elizabeth Bowen (Bowen-8817) and Eleanor Bowen (Bowen-9295). Elizabeth was born circa 1816 and Eleanor in 1819 most likely in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth and her first husband Edward Stevenson were members of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Lebanon Co., PA when their first child was christened. Eleanor's obituary indicates she was orphaned in about 1826 and sent to live in Ohio. Some speculate that their parents were William Bowen and Elizabeth Merryman, but evidence to support this relationship is absent.

My Bowen line includes my great grandfather William Rich Bowen (1859 - 1931). He was born at Huntland, TN. His son Rawls Coston Bowen was my grandfather. Everything I have prior to William Rich is somewhat speculative. There is some reason to suspect that our Bowen family may have been Boren earlier. Would enjoy sharing with others who have information on this Bowen line.

Nathan, I would like to join the Bowen One Name Study. I am an almost-definite descendent of Griffith Bowen. For what that means see the profile of my ancestor Samuel Bowen-2383 (and his brother Joshua Bowen-9354). I have a couple of questions. This page mentions "add your questions to the bulletin board". Does that mean the comments here, or is it something else and if so where? Is there any more information about the study other than what is described here? A member list?

I see you’ve tested on AncestryDNA. It is possible to extract your Y chromosome haplotype from that data if you don’t already have it. One outstanding question is whether Griffith and Richard were related paternally. If you are indeed descended from Griffith, your Y chromosome haplotype would shed some light on that area. All of Richard’s descendants are haplogroup G2a-

Nathan, I am not at all familiar with this level of DNA analysis. However, I did download my Ancestry data and followed steps I found on the web for determining haplogroup at https://ytree.morleydna.com/predict. The apparent best result looks like:

R1b1a2a1a L11/PF6539/S127, L151/PF6542, YSC0000082, YSC0000191, L52/PF6541, PF6546/P310/S129

Interesting, so if your results are accurate and your suspicions about your relationship to Griffith are correct , then this would indicate that Griffith and Richard (both in New England in 1630-1640) were not descended from the same male ancestor.

You can add R1b1a2a1a or R-L151 as your Y chromosome haplotype in your DNA results section if you like. For the test I would just say MorleyDNA using AncestryDNA Data or something like that. There are several groups of men with the Bowen surname that claim Welsh ancestry and have tested at FTDNA that share the R1b Y chromosome haplotype with you. I'm starting to look at the relatedness between these men and will try to assign common ancestors to group these men as well. Eventually, it will be possible to see which claim descent from Griffith and group you all together if you have the same Y chromosome haplotypes.

I (Nathan J. Bowen) am personally interested in connecting with relatives of Bowen men now living in the UK for Y chromosome testing. We are trying to identify the origin of our likely shared common ancestor, Richard Bowen. He emigrated to Massachusetts in ~1638-1640. There is a group of us who have all tested positive for Y chromosome Haplogroup G. By ISOGG:G2a2b2a1a1b1a1a2a2a1 Z17787, Z17792; by Yfull:G-4600; and by FTDNA: as G-L497:Group 764> CTS4803+ Z30771+ F3484+ Z17787+.
